1-0 home defeat

SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, January 19.- A penalty conceded in the first half brought the UANL Tigres to their first defeat of the Clausura 2019, losing 1-0 to the Cruz Azul Máquina Celeste.

Guido Pizarro commits a foul inside the box, forcing referee Fernando Guerrero to award a penalty, which was converted by Elías Hernández, meaning Tigres still has four points in the tournament so far.

FIRST HALF

The start of the match was intense, with a foul on Enner Valencia just two minutes in, and, a couple of minutes later, Nahuel Guzmán was forced to anticipate and cut off the Máquina’s attack. Tigres and Cruz Azul would both fight tooth and nail to avoid defeat.

At minute 11, our team, creating an option, came in from the right with a cutback pass to Valencia, but his shot was saved by Jesús Corona who conceded a corner.

Afterwards, it was André-Pierre Gignac who came very close with a header that went high.

At 19’, Luis Quiñones stole the ball on the left, broke into the box, but the defense intercepted his cross long before it could reach the goal.

A minute later, following a corner, it was Hugo Ayala’s turn, with a header in the box that was slightly too high. Tigres was creating opportunities and it seemed just a matter of time before they would achieve even more.

Determined to attack, Gignac, in an individual play with two cutbacks, attempted a shot, but missed to the right, silencing the cries of ‘goal’.

However, at minute 31, Guido Pizarro conceded a penalty, which was converted a minute later by Elías Hernández with a shot close to the right post, despite Nahuel’s valiant effort. The evening’s 0-1 score put us in a difficult position.

SECOND HALF

After the break, Tigres, forced to look for more, moved its lines forward, but had little success in overlapping. On the contrary, the opponent was coming dangerously close to Nahuel’s goal.

At 54’, Gignac attempted an individual play with a powerful shot that was slightly off target from Corona’s net.

The Máquina responded with a shot by Martín Cauteruccio that hit the crossbar, saving our side from conceding the second. Luis Rodríguez responded for Tigres with a shot that barely missed to the right.

Afterwards, at 59’, Jonathan Rodríguez put us on the edge of our seats again, with a shot in the box that was just wide of the left post.

Tuca then made his first substitution, replacing Luis Quiñones with Jürgen Damm, at minute 62, to make the most of Damm’s speed and support the defense on the left flank.

At 68, Enner Valencia took advantage of a mistake and broke away, closely marked, though in control of the ball, penetrated the box but the defense intercepted his cross, conceding a corner.

Soon after, Eduardo Vargas came onto the pitch, replacing Valencia, clearly showing that Tuca wanted to refresh the attack.

Vargas came close at minute 79 off a cutback from Damm inside the box, but his attempt was wide to the right.

Time was against Tigres, who suffered their first loss in the Clausura 2019, to remain on four points.
