Andy Delort chose Tigres to shine
SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA | Thursday, September 1, 2016.- He’s just a few days from his 25th birthday, he’s French and he’s always been known for playing where he wants, regardless of the names and blazons of the team that’s offering him a contract. His name, Andy Delort, who today joins the UANL Tigres to strengthen the team that’s currently competing in the 2016 Summer (Apertura) Championship and the CONCACAF Champions League.
Delort was born in Sète, a small Montpellier town with an area of 24.21 km2 and just over 43 thousand inhabitants, lying barely 160 kilometers from Martigues, the land that witnessed the first steps of André-Pierre Gignac in this world.
The center forward signed with the felines after transferring from the French Ligue 1 club Stade Malherbe Caen, where he scored 12 goals last year, contributing 31% of his side’s goals.
Andy began his career at FC Sète 34 at the age of seven, playing with his hometown team until he was 16 when he moved, in 2008, to the junior ranks of AJ Ajaccio, after scoring 30 goals in France’s U19 league.
His upward career began to attract interest from more powerful teams, including the German side Borussia Dortmund and the French team FC Bourdeaux, both of which offered him contracts. However, Andy chose to sign with Nimes Olympique, given its location just an hour away from his hometown, Sète.
At the age of 17 he set out to make a name for himself in French football. He stayed briefly with Nimes and later decided to return to Ajaccio, where he played a part in the team’s promotion to Ligue 1 and was also called up to France’s U20 National Team.
His journey continued to Metz, a return to Ajaccio, Tours FC, Wigan Athletic, in England, and his original team, SM Caen. He scored goals for all these sides, advancing his career. Even though major French clubs had approached him, he preferred to emigrate to Mexico to join the same team as André-Pierre.
Delort followed in Gignac’s footsteps, choosing where he wants to play, disregarding others’ opinions. He has now joined Tigres to form a landmark team in Mexican football.
