Tigres opens at home in the Clausura 2017

SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA | Saturday, January 7, 2017.- Just 18 days ago, Tigres was crowned Champions of the 2016 Summer Tournament (Apertura) and this Saturday they will be setting off on a new adventure, this time in the 2017 Winter Tournament (Clausura), defending their title against Santos Laguna on the opening day and at the Universitario Stadium, where the Incomparable Ones (the fans) witnessed the felines’ triumph in winning a fifth star.

Even though they only came back to work five days ago, Ricardo Ferretti’s men will already have to face their first match, without the full squad, since some of the team members who played with greater regularity throughout the last tournament are still on vacation.

The universitarios will be competing against the La Comarca team, a historically complicated side. In 65 matches, a draw has been the dominant result (28), compared with 19 victories for Tigres and 18 for Santos Laguna.

The last time these two sides came face to face was also on Day 1, but of the Apertura 2016, in Torreón. The match ended without any goals, giving the felines their first point of the tournament, and this Saturday they will be seeking to start the championship by winning three points.

Santos will be arriving with the aim of earning points come what may to avoid the relegation spots on the table, where they are currently in 13th place, while Tigres starts as the second best-ranked team, after a fantastic effort in the past five tournaments, in which they reached three finals and won two League titles.

In the head-to-head, Tigres has performed better against Santos in the Universitario Stadium, with 13 victories compared to its opponent’s 4, although there have been 15 ties.

Another of Tigres’ goals for this tournament is to become Second-time Champions, something that has only occurred twice in short tournaments, with Pumas and León, and for which they have kept practically the same squad that was crowned champions on that epic Christmas Day.
