Tigres Take Back the Top Spot, for Now: 4-1!
SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, March 16th.- The UANL Tigres took back the top spot in Mexican football, defeating the Querétaro Gallos 4-1, to reach a total of 26 points, just three more than their closest rival.
Goals by Julián Quiñones, who scored twice, Carlos Salcedo and Eduardo Vargas gave our team their eighth win in 11 matches in the Liga MX Clausura 2019 tournament.
León, who is hosting Veracruz on Sunday evening, is the only team that could topple Ricardo Ferretti’s players from the top of the table.
Our team got straight down to business, knowing that they needed three points to recover their leadership position in the Liga, to the extent that just one minute into the match Julián Quiñones created an opportunity that went straight into the hands of Querétaro’s goalkeeper.
At 4’, Luis Quiñones broke away down the right and got off a cross that Jesús Dueñas intended to finish, but the pass was too long.
Then, around the seventh minute, Luis Quiñones advanced to cross into the box, where Julián, face-to-face with the keeper, headed the ball in, bringing the Incomparable fans to their feet in the Universitario Stadium.
Now they were ahead, Ricardo Ferretti’s men wanted more and, at 10’, midfielder Dueñas looked for Julián, but the defense intervened.
Just a couple of minutes later, following a corner, Carlos Salcedo headed the second goal into the net. The 2-0 lead made things easier for our team, although they continued to show that they wanted even more.
As a result, at 19’, Hugo Ayala came close with a header that hit the bar. The visitors were safe for now. Afterwards, at 22’, Dueñas’ mid-distance shot went over the crossbar.
Soon after, at 27’ and 28’, Eduardo Vargas had a couple of chances, first with a header that went high and next with a shot that was aimed at the left post, but went over the end line instead.
Querétaro had an opportunity at 32’, when Ake Loba forced Nahuel Guzmán to come far off his line to defend his goal.
At minute 42, Vargas had an opportunity with a mid-range shot that hit the left-hand post.
For the second half, Tigres maintained its attacking strategy, knowing that the goal difference could begin to impact the fight for the top spot.
At 48’, Vargas received outside the box, but his soft shot went wide to the right. Soon after, at 53’, the Gallos reacted with a shot by Daniel Villalva that Patón stretched to save and keep out of his net.
A minute later, Luis Quiñones broke away down the left, crossed to the far post, where an unmarked Julián headed the ball in, bringing the score to 3-0 and painting the night yellow and blue.
At that point, the opponent got a break, capitalizing on Tigres’ slackened pace, which allowed the Gallos to shrink the difference at 69’, when Daniel Villalba, in an individual play in the box, crossed to Ake Loba, who made it 3-1.
The unremitting support of the Incomparable fans drove Tigres to look for the fourth, which they achieved thanks to Vargas, who received on the edge of the box at 74’, shook off his mark and shot past the goalkeeper 4-1.
Three minutes later, the referee awarded Luis Quiñones a penalty, but VAR didn’t agree and took away the chance of a fifth for our side.
Nevertheless, Vargas came close again at 80’, controlling the ball, but the shot went over the bar.
Victory was for us in the end and, for now, put us back at the top of Mexican football.
