Tigres Women Close to Two-Times Champions… They’re in the Final!

SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, December 3.- Tigres Women have done it for the second consecutive tournament, winning a spot in the Final of  the Women’s Liga MX after defeating the Guadalajara Chivas 4-2 (5-3 aggregate).

As a result, Tigres Women will be competing against América for the Apertura 2018 title on Friday in the Azteca Stadium and on Monday, December 10, in the Universitario.

Our players got off to an impressive start, with possession and overlapping, to the extent that just three minutes into the match, Jaqueline Ovalle came very close to scoring, but her shot was blocked by Chivas’ goalkeeper.

Guadalajara reacted a minute later, when Alejandra Gutiérrez conceded a corner after a breakaway by the opponent, and then Brenda Viramontes’ header went just wide of the left post.

Tigres was beginning to be dominated in possession, but soon settled down at minute 15, when, off a direct free kick, Liliana Mercado opened the scoring with a low, powerful shot into the center of the goal.

Then, at minute 23, Katty Martínez’s cross was wide to the left, just centimeters from scoring.

It seemed to be our team’s moment, but, at 30’, Susan Vejarano appeared and headed the ball in over Ale Gutiérrez, making it 1-1, a score that still favored Tigres Women, who just two minutes later made it 2-1, when Belén Cruz crossed from the right and Jacqueline Ovalle headed the ball into the back of the net.

Guadalajara wasn’t about to give up, knowing that one more goal would give them the chance to be in the Final and, at 39’, equalized in a cross from the right by Norma Duarte who put the ball inside the far post to make it 2-2.

The outcome was starting to look negative for our side, so, at minute 41, Cristina Ferral, following a corner,  hit the crossbar and Greta Espinoza scored off the rebound, making it 3-2.

The pace remained the same in the second half, with an explosive Tigres Women, since, at 46’, Katty Martínez’s shot went over the crossbar.

Then, at 49’, it was Belén Cruz who gave Chivas a scare with a direct free kick on the edge of the box, although her attempt was too high.

At minute 57, Katty Martínez came close again, controlling a ball inside the box, but her shot was intercepted by a defender, conceding a corner. In the very next play, Carolina Jaramillo’s attempt sought the right post.

The evening got even better for our players at minute 74, when Chivas was left one woman down after Priscila Padilla was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

Katty Martínez was determined to score the fourth goal that would put them at ease and, at minute 79, her shot from outside the box missed to the right. Afterwards, Belén Cruz received in the goal area, but the goalkeeper was one step ahead.

The last few minutes were spent looking for the fourth, but Guadalajara, with nothing to lose, persisted in counterattacking.

However, our side generated more opportunities, such as, at 88’, when Katty Martínez’s soft, precise shot was on target but found the goalkeeper’s hands.

Then, at 90’, Katty Martínez pressed forward in an individual play inside the box, but the defense intercepted her shot, conceding a corner. In the very next play, Carolina Jaramillo put the ball in by the far post, bringing the score to 4-2, giving us a ticket to the Final for the second consecutive tournament.
