Tigres Women Earn Three Points in the Laguna
TORREÓN | Thursday, January 24, 2019.- Tigres Women continued with their upward curve to reach nine points in the Women’s Liga MX, having achieved a 1-3 away victory over Santos Laguna that put them back at the top not only of Group 2, but also the General Table.
Now, it’s time to prepare for the Women’s Derby on Monday, January 28th, when, for the tenth time in their history, Tigres Women will be facing the Monterrey Rayadas, buoyed by an advantage of five wins, two losses and three draws.
The match in this double-fixture week saw the fiery felines come out onto the pitch to score just two minutes in. Belén Cruz added to her goal tally with a mid-distance, direct free kick that was very similar to the goal she scored in the previous match. The Acapulco-born player shot and put the ball into the net before even the goalkeeper could react.
Two minutes later, Fernanda Elizondo appeared and scored the second, after a fine counterattack led by Evelyn González with a cross that was finished by Fer. The pressure put on by Tigres at that moment was making things difficult for the hosts.
Unfortunately for Tigres Women, problems very soon arose, when, at minute 11, goalkeeper Alejandra Gutiérrez was injured and had to leave the field on a stretcher. She was replaced by Ángeles Martínez.
At minute 14, Santos welcomed the netkeeper from the penalty series in the Final against Rayadas with a goal by Yahaira Flores that narrowed the goal difference.
As of that moment, Tigres’ pace changed compared with the first few minutes and they struggled more towards the end of the first half, though scoring the third in stoppage time through Blanca Solís, who was back on track as a goal scorer after her previous goal on January 27, 2018.
After the break, the teams took turns at being in control and, although Tigres Women had the best chances in front of their opponent’s goal, neither side could find the back of the net.
Fer Elizondo, Blanca and Evelyn became Santos’ worst nightmare, with a couple of opportunities, though the crossbar and the goalkeeper prevented the goal difference from growing.
For this match, Jacqueline Ovalle and Liliana Mercado, as substitutes, were back from participating with the Major National Team, while Nayeli Rangel, Katty Martínez and Nancy Antonio stayed in Monterrey to continue preparing for the Derby.
