Tigres Women Take the Lead in the Playoffs: 2-1!
PUEBLA, April 25.- Tigres Women came from behind, turning the match around in stoppage time to defeat Puebla Women 2-1, in the first leg of the Clausura 2019 Quarter Finals.
Katty Martínez equalized with a shot in the box and Liliana Mercado made sure that they would take a goal advantage home by converting a penalty at minute 92.
From the very first minute, our team wanted the ball and, when they had it, sought to pass around the pitch, achieving possession and attacks that kept the hosts at bay.
Belén Cruz on the right and Katty Martínez on the left generated good opportunities in La Franja’s box, although the hosts warded off their attacks while trying to settle into the field of play.
Minute 30 saw the best play of the first half, when the goalkeeper saved a shot by Belén Cruz and Selene Cortés’ counterattack hit the bar.
Puebla’s reaction came five minutes later, when Maria López tried to capitalize on a ball that had slipped away from our keeper, Ofelia Solís.
Control of the match was shared equally in the midfield, though La Franja’s goalkeeper, Brissa Rangel, was becoming the best player of the match.
Liliana Mercado managed a weak shot at 40’, and later Katty Martínez attempted to create an opportunity in an individual play, but was unsuccessful.
After the break, Ramón Villa Zevallos’ players came out with the idea of improving their performance across the field of play, which was reflected at minute 51 when Puebla’s keeper was kept busy blocking two goal opportunities.
Karen Luna brought Brissa Rangel off her line and in the next play Puebla’s goalkeeper spectacularly blocked on the line a scissor kick by Belén Cruz from inside the box.
However, the hosts put the pressure on and, at the 67th minute, Miriam defeated our keeper inside the box with a header to put her side ahead 1-0.
However, Tigres held their own and, at minute 71, Katty Martínez received in the box, made a half-turn to avoid her mark and shot to the left of the goalkeeper, who could do nothing about it. Our side was back in the fight with the score at 1-1.
At minute 75, Blanca Solís, who had come on to replace Sonia Vázquez, glanced it just wide of the left post and, a minute later, a Puebla defender almost scored an own goal.
Solís persisted at 77’, when in an individual play she broke into the box, but her weak shot went into the keeper’s hands.
And just when it looked as though the match would end in a draw, a handball was called inside the box on a Puebla defender, giving away a penalty to our side. Liliana Mercado, at 92’, converted the last-minute penalty to put our side ahead.
