Tigres Women Undefeated Leader of Liga MX
Ramón Villa Zevallos’ players overcame Monarcas Women in the Morelos Stadium 1-5 with goals by Katty Martínez, Belén Cruz, Fernanda Elizondo, Greta Espinoza and Jackie Ovalle.
MORELIA, MICH. | OCTOBER 29, 2018.- In a comfortable position, since they have already qualified to the Apertura 2018 Playoffs, are the reigning champions and the only undefeated side, Tigres Women came out onto Monarcas Women’s pitch ad brought 3 points home to the Sultana of the North.
The surprise today was that Tigres gave several starters, such as Karen Luna, Liliana Mercado and Alejandra Gutiérrez, a rest, allowing Paulina Solís and Natalia Miramontes to start for the first time, and Vania Villalobos, return to the goal, after her magnificent performance on day 4 against Santos. This time, the captain’s armband was worn by Nancy Antonio.
Tigres , as usual, took the initiative from the very start of the match and came face to face with an opponent that offered some concessions, but held on well, at least in the first few minutes, since, at minute 12, Belén Cruz received a long pass from Cristina Ferral (who played the whole match as a center forward), and sent a shot from outside the box that was impossible for Diana García to save.
Just 6 minutes later, Nancy managed to recover the ball, crossed to Evelyn González who controlled with a header that landed at Katty Martínez’s feet, and she pushed the ball in to score the second of the match and her personal eleventh.
Tigres were on top form, their confidence soared and they were handling the match in their usual way. The players were motivated and wanted more, as though they hadn’t yet qualified.
At 31, a set-piece situation, something that Tigres Women practice over and over again in the training sessions, gave our team their third goal of the match. Belén Cruz crossed to Jackie Ovalle, who passed to Evelyn González, but her powerful shot hit the crossbar. Katty Martínez recovered with a header that landed at Greta Espinoza’s feet and she just prodded it in to score the third for the Universitarias.
Just before the end of the first half, Katty missed an opportunity to score the fourth, since her shot was easily saved by Morelia’s goalkeeper.
Tigres came back from half-time with the same lineup that was causing the opponent so much trouble as they lost battles in the midfield and their goalkeeper, García, was kept on her toes inside the goal area, such as when Nayeli Rangel’s header, following a corner, went high over the Michoacán goal.
At 69, Katty Martínez had another chance in a play that is a classic for her, but she couldn’t put the power behind it to do any damage.
Minutes later, as Villalobos came off her line, Dalia Molina scored for Monarcas. With Akemi Yokoyama on the field, replacing Greta Espinoza, Tigres defense had a fresh player to continue to block any attacks by Morelia. Afterwards, Paulina Solís was replaced by Johana López and the third and final substitution by Villa Zevallos was Nayeli Rangel with Fernanda Elizondo.
And it was precisely Elizondo who soon made the most of her opportunity to be on the field, since she scored Tigres’ fourth goal in a play fought and won by Katty Martínez in the midfield, then crossed to Fer who unhesitatingly put the ball in the back of the net. The fifth goal just a minute later, was the reward for the untiring efforts of Jacqueline Ovalle, who received a long pass on the left flank, overcame Morelia’s defense twice and then her left-footed shot ended up in the net, bringing the final score to 1-5.
This result brings Tigres Women to 34 points, puts them in the top spot and makes them the only undefeated team of the competition, in which they are defending champions, having won in the Clausura 2018 tournament.
